The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh
September 28-October 20, 2007
Directed by Alex Willis
Running Time: 2 hr, 38 mins including intermission
This show contains mature themes, graphic language,
violence, smoking, and loud noises. You have been warned.
A child murderer, his brother, two cops … and what is art?
Combining the Brother's Grimm and Kafka, Tarantino and Orwell,
Martin McDonagh sets this blackest of comedies in an Eastern
European dictatorship in the wake of a series of child murders.
Katurian, a writer of gruesome "children's" stories, and his
brother are interrogated for these murders by Detectives
Tupolski and Ariel. Does the state have the right to
censor these works? What qualifies as art? And how
much responsibility does an artist have for the life their
creation takes on?
The Pillowman received the Olivier Award for Best New Play in
2004, the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play (Foreign) in
2005, as well as two Tony Awards and two Drama desk awards.
